Cue the Steel Guitar: Dusty’s Old Fence Gets Its Final Verse
Dusty spends his weekday afternoons on 93.7 The Bull, spinning country hits for St. Louis. And if there’s one thing a country DJ knows, it’s a sad song. Turns out he had one playing in his own backyard for years, and it wasn’t coming from the radio.
The old fence’s sad song
Every country song needs a fence that’s seen better days, and Dusty’s had been singing the same tired verse since he and his family bought the house. “I’m sure when it was installed it was great,” he says, “but our old fence, it was just gross.” Leaning, weathered, one strong wind from writing its own goodbye letter, it was the kind of wear you stop noticing until a guest points it out, or you finally catch it on camera.
This summer, Dusty decided the old fence had earned its final bow. He called in his friends at Fence & Deck Depot, and the record needed a new track.
A one-day rewrite
No power ballads here, just a crew that showed up and got to work. “So Fence and Deck Depot comes out, instantly removes the old fence,” Dusty says. From there, new white vinyl panels started going in the same day. “Slats start going in and it was across the board,” he says. “The crew was just seamless.”
It wasn’t just a like-for-like swap, either. It was a genre change. “One thing we have wanted to do at our house since we bought it a long time ago, we’re actually going from a wood fence to a white vinyl fence,” Dusty explains, clearly not mad about it. Vinyl skips the sanding, staining, and yearly upkeep a wood fence demands, and it holds its color and its lines for years, no encore performances required.
The encore
By the end of the day, the transformation was hard to believe, and Dusty wasn’t the only one enjoying the new number. His neighbors were happy too. They didn’t have to look at the old fence anymore, either. “I mean, look at it, going from that wooden fence to this amazing gorgeous vinyl fence in a day,” he says, walking the new fence line. “They got everything in, set ready to go, and I’m telling you, they can do the same for you.”
His closing line, standing in front of the finished fence, needs no harmony: “It’s gorgeous.”
